This program is now out of print.  The content is still good (if you own the CD) but the links on this page may not work.

Before teaching with this CD, check to make sure the VIDEOS work in the Bible Time Theater section of the program. If the curtain just opens and closes without playing the video, you need to open the CD's files and double-click on the Quicktime Installation program (often abbreviated QT32.exe). Follow the prompts. The videos require this program to be installed from the CD. If you get a "3mb Virtual Memory" or "xobglu16.dll" error message, see our solution for Noah CD at www.sundaysoftware.com/support

This resource is provided to help you prepare lessons using the Jonah, Ruth and Samson CD-ROM. If you are not familiar with this CD, browse through it now. It will give you a better feel for the program, these Teaching Tips and this outline.

Please note that only the Samson story is included in its entirety on this CD. The Ruth story is somewhat abbreviated. The Jonah story stops short of Jonah's actual visit to Nineveh. Another important observation about this CD is that unlike the others in this series, the Kids Application Bible Study notes are balanced more toward meanings in the story rather than background notes. Read the outline and browse some of the study notes in the Discover the Bible section. This will really help guide and shape your lesson preparation.

How to use this CD in your classroom...

Exploring, discussing, and enjoying the entire CD will be pretty near impossible in the typical 45 minute class. You might just want to hit the highlights: The Main interactive story (A Special Baby), the Bible Time Theater videos, and a few study notes in the Discover the Bible section, followed by the Bible Quizshow.

You could create a unit of study using several different CDs. "Homepages" for each of these heroes can be found Bibleland.com CD. They also have multimedia maps in our favorite map program: Walking in Their Sandals.

The Bible Game Show could be played at the end of class, OR in a future class period as review. If you're doing a unit on these heroes, you might also use the Game Show to see what the kids already know.

The Hall of Fame heroes are also mentioned in several other places in the program. You could create a "Wall of Fame" in your classroom and have students research the Hall of Fame characters starting at the Hall of Fame and then exploring the rest of the CD.

You could just use the Discover the Bible section as a Bible study. In this scenario, the teacher is right there with the kids. Kids take turns reading the Kids Application Bible study notes and these become fodder for discussion if the teacher wishes to pause. The Kids Application Bible study notes found throughout the Discover the Bible scripture readings contain a number of interesting discussion starters which could be the basis for other complete lessons. The subjects of each of these notes is listed in this outline.

The stories of Ruth, Jonah and Samson can also be found in at least two other CDs: Bibleland.com and Amazing Bible Expedition.

Please note that the Bible Game Show covers all three stories at once. This is another difference between this CD and the other in the series: the gameshow covers all three stories at once. Since the questions come randomly from all three stories, you can't use the gameshow just to review one story. Then again, the kids may not mind one bit. The Bible Game Show could also be used as a stand alone quiz to see how familiar kids are with all three stories.

Please note that there is an undocumented mistake in the Hall of Fame section that shouldn't affect your use. In both Samson and Ruth, clicking on the "people they knew" gets you "Life of." Clicking on "Life of" gets you "people they knew. So much for perfect quality control! The Hall of Fame heroes are also mentioned in several other places in the program. You could create a "Wall of Fame" in your classroom and have students research the Hall of Fame characters starting at the Hall of Fame and then exploring the rest of the CD.

Technical Notes:

For best performance....Although the box specifications say this CD will run on an older 486 or Mac, we recommend you run it on a computer with AT LEAST 16 megs of RAM and an 8 speed or higher CD drive. If you're running this series of CDS on a slower machine, counsel patience to your kids.

Printing Art Center Pictures...The ART CENTER pictures cannot be printed out through the program itself. However, in Windows 95 you can press the Print Screen button on the keyboard and this will save it to the Windows clipboard. Open up a wordprocessor program or Wordpad (which comes with Win 95) and select PASTE from the edit button, then...print out the page (color or B+W). That's how I did the graphics on this page.

Please note that there's a glitch in the program here. The Life of and People They Knew signs are reversed in Samson and Ruth. For the sake of clarity, the following notes act as if they weren't reversed.

Life of Ruth: Naomi goes home, Ruth works for food, A big wedding.

People Ruth Knew: Naomi, Boaz, Orpah (Did you know television star Oprah is named after Orpah. Oprah's

mom misspelled the name!)

Life of Samson: Samson's Birth, Samson and Delilah, Samson's Final Victory.

People Samson Knew: Manoah, Delilah, Philistines

Life of Jonah: Jonah runs away, Jonah's plans are changed by the fish, Jonah obeys.

People Jonah Knew: Amittai, Sailors, Ninevites

Bible Time Theatre (2 video clips, no Ruth)

Jonah and the Big Fish

Samson --covers angel's annunciation of Samson's birth and Delilah episode

Bible Quiz Show

Comment: Unlike the other CDS in this series, this CD's Bible Quiz Show questions cover three stories in somewhat random order. Thus, if you're only studying one character at a time the quiz show might not be as helpful in review since it will also include the other two character's stories.

Final Observations:

Putting these three stories together on one CD may have been a marketing decision on the part of the developers. However, close inspection of the stories and study notes and verses on the CD reveals a providentially over-arching theme: CALL TO OBEDIENCE -- AFRAID -- PRAY. There's some lesson fodder for you.
