Overview:
Interactive Parables is a collection of quizzes about individual parables -who's questions you discover and answer as you play through a multi-level 3d MAZE.

  • You select from 24 Jesus parables to be quizzed about.

  • You select from 12 different styles of 3D MAZES to play through.

In order to find the content and win the game, you must play your way through the 3d game maze, avoiding traps, gamey challenges, rolling barrels, flying things, --while collecting, powering up on stars, jumping chasms etc, and answering multiple choice and true/false questions about the parable which are found throughout your maze.

Important Note to Teachers: This game is optimally for ages 10 and up, as well us teens and adults. Each game focuses on one parable, and may take as much as 45 minutes to complete -- depending on the player's skill level and ability to answer the parable questions. See more notes below.

Details:
You begin by selecting the parable you want to learn, then select the type of 3d Maze you want to play that content in. The Bible story is first presented as a graphic outside the maze, then you enter a maze of rooms and game levels. Each room/level is filled with pop-up questions to answer, things to jump, run from, and otherwise avoid, plus game objectives to complete (keys and stars to collect),  and bonus points to claim. Nothing scary! Just challenging and fun.

The quiz questions assume a basic knowledge of the parable -such as its parts, but also its basic meaning. Of course, if you don't know the answer, you'll have to try again. The game does offer text of the parable at the beginning of each game, but I would suggest that Interactive Parables is the kind of game you use AFTER a Bible study, and not in place of one. Of course, playing it with your Bible open to the parable, is an even better idea!

In each game you'll meet "Mr. Green Jeans" (pictured right) -a young lad who is confused about the story. You must answer his questions with the correct response in order to receive gems that allow you to complete the level. Maps and inventories of each level are at your fingertips.

At the beginning of each game you can choose the "style" of game level theme you want to play your parable in. Some are spartan and a bit futuristic, others look like the 'warehouse' see in the picture here on the right.  The level themes and decor are  modest. The focus is on the game action.

Important "Lesson Time" notes:

Each parable game takes upwards of 45 minutes to complete --depending on how good you are at playing the game. The mazes and game play aren't that hard (for gamers), but they are challenging, require plenty of time to play, and you may run out of turns and have to go back to your last saved location. Adults who don't have experience playing 'video games' or 3d style games will find IP difficult to preview. Get a teen to help!

And keep this in mind too: the less they know about the story, the more time it will take to complete the quizzes. The typical young player (or adult) will need several attempts and restarts to get through each quiz's game levels. And that doesn't leave much time for Bible study and discussion (which our typical customer would want to add). Thus, the game probably doesn't fit in the typical lesson timeslot, especially if you need to wrap some study and discussion around the software use. Sharp gamer teens can complete a game in 30 minutes, but our testing and customer feedback indicates that ages 10-12 will need a little more time.

Having said this... IP is a good resource for LESSON REVIEW if you have plenty of TIME to use it. This is a nice game for “after the lesson,” unstructured game time, or home use. Adults will enjoy this game too. but if the Big Boot, or jumps or levels seem to hard to you, see my GAME TIPS below on this page. <>< Neil

Interactive Parables is for Ages 10 and up. Reading ability IS REQUIRED, as is a knowledge of the parable in order to compete and complete. Some third graders might do fine with it, but need plenty of time to complete each quiz game. Scriptures are in an easy to read version. The challenging 3D gameplay makes pre-teens and teens the logical audience for this game. Quiz questions ask both about facts and meanings in the stories. Some selectable level styles are harder than others (which will help your gamers feel challenged).

IP GAME TIPS

(click Help in the game menu for details)

  • Are you getting "Game Over" screens too often? As long as you can keep from hitting 0% on your health, you'll avoid Game Over. So, if you are running low on health, be sure to find a heart so you'll be back to 100%. If you can't find a heart, the small golden plus signs will give you some health, as well as points.

  • Are long jumps getting you down? Don't forget to get a good run at them (use the SHIFT key) before jumping (SPACE BAR). But what if you overshoot? When you are over where you want to stop, hit jump again (SPACE BAR) to drop!

  • Are some levels/maps too hard? Be sure to try out the different levels/maps. You can play ANY lesson on any of the maps! Some are more challenging than others.

  • Are boots squishing you and getting you down? If there is an Armor PowerUp nearby, pick up enough PowerUp Stars to activate it. While wearing the armor you needn't be afraid of those boots. Run or jump into them and they will squeal and disappear!
