Sunday Software has been a fan of Ilumina for many years through its many versions. The Ilumina Bible software now ships on a DVD. Previously, the publisher also expensively packaged it with 5 CDs in addition to the dvd just in case the consumer didn't have a DVD enabled CD drive on their computer. (btw: You can do a full install and put the dvd on the shelf.)  It also came in an expensive box. Frankly, we thought the box and extra CDs were a waste and are glad they changed that.

Over the years they have UPDATED the program and offered it in different editions (Starter, Gold, Parent-Teacher, Gold Premium). Now finally they have settled on one simple package, one full edition dvd, and one simple name: The Ilumina Bible.

Ilumina's Theological Point of View

Sunday Software has been following the Bible-ware market for years and comparing titles. Nothing comes close to iLUMINA's multimedia quality, content, and design. It's a true multimedia Bible, and not just a Bible database with a few pictures. This is a HUGE collection of integrated study resources.

iLumina is so packed with content that it comes on a DVD. It can be fully installed to your computer, or run off of the DVD.

How are our customers using iLumina?

Most of our customers are buying Ilumina for themselves, or for another adult. Many will project it for adult Bible class, or use it to prepare their lessons. Pastors find it very helpful, especially if they're doing research for a sermon or study away from their office. We have teachers using iLumina to introduce lessons to their kids. And in some Sunday Schools, the older kids and teens are using it to dig into their Bible lesson.  iLumina is too complex for children (up to about age 11), but they DO enjoy the media if they have the help of a teacher or parent.

If you have questions don't hesitate to email me or chat with me online.   <>< Neil MacQueen, Sunday Software

Theologically Speaking:

Ilumina's Life Application Study Notes, commentaries, charts and Bible encyclopedia articles (etc) come from Tyndale House Publishers, ---a traditional mainstream Christian publisher. Most church people know them as the publisher of the popular "Life Application Bible" series, and Ilumina has full versions of both the Life Application study notes and Life Application Commentary.

In general the 'Life Application' material is very ecumenical. This Presbyterian minister found only a few things I wish they had put  differently --which about the same percentage I encounter in the average sermon!

The Life Application Study Notes and Commentary are very well written and insightful. They shy away being controversial --tending towards a personal "life application" emphasis.

One of my quick "litmus tests" with every Bible CD is to go to the notes on the Creation story. The articles and commentary accompanying the Creation passage in this CD do make brief reference to the creation vs science debate. In the graphic seen on this webpage, you can see the commentary notes about "male and female," "image of God," and sexuality. I was pleased they grappled with this topic in a balanced, non-confrontational style. Bible developers who split theological hairs or court controversy don't last long, so I'll give them that.

Some Bible students will not like the fact that the iLumina Bible takes a very traditional approach to some authorship and dating issues. In Genesis, the notes follow the traditional rabbinical teaching that the author was "Moses." Most students of the Bible know that to be debatable. I would have preferred that they were more mainstream in their attribution, but it's only a gnat in an otherwise immense blessing of software.

Most of the dozens upon dozens of Bible Charts  are good, and you can print them out as PDF study documents for personal or classroom use!  The better informed you are, the more likely you are to find topics or remarks you might disagree with. But all in all, the vast array of study materials in Ilumina are a fount of blessing.

Tyndale's New Living Translation is an actual translation, not the paraphrase that used to go by the name of the "Living Bible." It is a very easy to read translation and I recommend it highly for it's READABILITY. Click here to read how the NLT version translations Genesis 1.

About Sunday Software:

Sunday Software has been providing detailed reviews, recommendations and tech support to churches since 1996. Beginning as a ministry to Christian educators and pastors, Sunday Software has been blessed to grow into the largest producer of children and youth Bible story software and Bible games software.

We are no fly-by-night discounter. We're here for the long haul. We provide expert tech support for Ilumina, and can discuss your Bible software and theological needs relative to this product. We plow software profits back into the development of Bible software for children. Here's a list of many of our great children's Bible software programs.

Why we carry Ilumina:

As a minister myself, I've always kept an eye on the "Bible-ware" market... looking for the best multimedia Bible software available. I wanted a full-featured Bible program on my laptop, --one that was visually engaging, easy to use, and had real multimedia ..in addition to deep study resources. Over the years I've used many and seen most, and none come close to Ilumina as an enjoyable yet DEEP program to use. I continue to get great feedback from pastors and lay students who are using various Bible programs and Ilumina. And most agree...Ilumina continues to lead the pack.

Because the developer of Ilumina often updates the program with technical and content tweaks, we have made a commitment to sell the very LATEST VERSION of Ilumina. Unfortunately, some distributors order once in large quantities or have "special editions" made for ministry (which are mostly just the same program with a different package and higher price!). However, we stay in touch with the developers, and order in smaller quantities to make sure we are getting Tyndale's latest version.

Ilumina has come out in many different versions over the years. Some retailers are still selling the older versions, some of which will not work on the latest operating systems, or have glitches, or don't have the full complement of content and multimedia. Though the name and packaging and price has changed, we continue to only sell the latest best full version of Ilumina.

Ilumina versus the "GLO" Bible

The new "Glo" Bible from Zondervan is the latest Bible software to come to market, and it looks very promising. It has a very unique interface I call "ipad-like."  And it has a lot of media. Its study content, however, is QUITE a bit LESS than what you find in Ilumina, perhaps on the order of 60% to 80% less. Ilumina excels at providing commentaries, outlines, encyclopedic articles, charts, and small group bible study helps. We're also aware that some Glo users have had technical problems. Glo requires a dual-core processor and internet connection. Some new content they are promising will only be available for an additional charge. We're keeping our eye on Glo, but currently, Ilumina is the winner for us.

<>< Neil MacQueen

Version Alert!

The version of Ilumina you get from Sunday Software is always the very latest edition from the developer.

Some distributors have old stock purchased some time ago at a discount that may not have the latest technical updates. We only carry the latest version.

Helpful Installation Note:

The ILumina comes on a DVD, and when you first put it in your CD drive, your operating system may think it's a dvd movie and send up an "autorun" option to your screen. Clicking autorun will run the program FROM the DVD rather than install it.

However, we recommend you do a FULL INSTALLATION so you never have to handle the DVD again. To do this, click "open files" instead of "autorun" on that pop-up screen, then select the setup.exe file to do the full installation. Easy!
