in a Computer Lab First Place goes to... Christ Community Covenant
Church, Arvada CO. Our
judges took note of the seated presence of the teacher (on eye
level with kids) and the "all eyes focused" nature
of the photo. This picture is worth a thousand words about how
you teach with computers. I spoke with Robin Welsh at Christ
Community about the photo and asked if this is the way they teach
all the time --and she said yes. Looks like they'll enjoy and
teach well with the $100 in free software. Second Place goes to... Elba United Methodist, Elba, AL --photo of boy with Gameboy in his hand but focusing on the computer at his fellowship group. Notice too the others around him ignoring the Gameboy. Rachel Baxter, their CE leader wrote, "I told our kids they could bring their Gameboys to Super Kids Fellowship group. A few did such as this boy. But now they have all stopped bringing them, they prefer the computer lab - Go God!" The juxtaposition of the Gameboy and CE computer says a lot. $50 of free software to the kids at Elba.

We have a TIE for First Place: Wesley United
Methodist, Jefferson City MO This year's two winners were both top contenders among our judges, but for very different reasons. Wesley's photos caught our eye because of the creative way they put a lab in an office area by creating a tent. It looked like fun! Edwardsville's photo caught our eye because of the clean, uncluttered, well-spaced lab area that had plenty of workspace around each station and a discussion area....a model set-up many of us aspire to. Neil Note: We received over 40 entries in this category. There were some fun photos and interesting designs, but this is a contest and the judges have a tough decision. One thing that struck me personally as a judge, however, (and note this for next year's contest) was the number of lab photos showing computers stacked like cordwood too close and without workspace. On that score, Edwardsville UMC's set-up stood out. Ok....the puppet of Bildad the Bible Explorer (from Good Sam CD) won brownie points too.....but what a nice tie-in to the software. Wesley UMC's photo does show their computers close together, but what caught our attention was the reason they were together and how they had dressed up the "lab within the office" by creating a tent. Lisa their educator wrote that she put the lab in her office this year unwilling to wait to get started while they decided to build new classrooms. Both show a detailed attention to their lab setting and atmosphere. Neither church is very big either. The Winners will split the first and second place awards --receiving their choice of $75 worth of software from our catalog.
