Notes on Teaching with LoC CD   |  Teacher's Guide

Life of Christ CD is one of our best-selling programs for two reasons:

#1  Jesus is THE subject  ...and....
#2  LoC covers a large number of Jesus stories

  • 40 Narrated multimedia lessons and quizzes about Jesus
  • Interactive Learning Tools, Multimedia, Maps and more
  • An optional quest-style game through the database

"LoC" CD is a staple for many of our computer labs. And it's also very popular with our home users and gift-givers. It is often used in combination with other software and activities.

For more Jesus software, consult our Bible software cross reference. Also...check out our new "Jesus in Space" CD.

LIFE OF CHRIST'S MAIN FEATURE:

40 NARRATED MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS covering Jesus' life from birth to resurrection. Each of these 6 to 7 minute narrated presentations concludes with a question for discussion and a 6 Question Quiz about each lesson's content. This "lesson index" makes Life of Christ a terrific tool for Sunday Schools and home learning.

The 40 presentations can be played through from 1 to 40 as a game over several hours or days (or classes). But... in most Sunday Schools, teachers 'cherry pick" a lesson or two from the presentations that match up to their lesson for the day.

View the lesson index here

Life of Christ does a particularly good job of covering HOLY WEEK and the MIRACLES of Jesus.

LIFE OF CHRIST'S SECOND NICE FEATURE:

The Professor's Office is essentially a database of multimedia and interactive quizzes and map about Christ's life and the New Testament.  This database includes The Professor's "Bookshelf" -a treasure trove of interactive content you can use in conjunction with the 40 lessons -or separately. See the program outline below for what's on the Professor's shelf.

Teacher's cherry picking a presentation or two from the 40 lessons will often also have their student pick/browse one of the database sections related to their lesson.

This program has been in use for several years in Sunday School, youth classes, Confirmation, at home, and in Christian schools. It's optimal age range is grades 3rd - 12th. Many of us regularly s-t-r-e-t-c-h it down to our K-2nd grades.

LIFE OF CHRIST'S OTHER GREAT FEATURES:

LoC has INDIVIDUAL USER SIGN-INs... Life of Christ tracks individual users at sign-in. It remembers what lessons they have completed or need to complete. It also keeps track of Scorebook and Cluebook information and prints out certificates of completion as student progress through levels of knowledge. Read more about those features below...

The sign-in isn't important if you're just cherry-picking lessons for teaching purposes. It's there for those who want to have their student work through the entire CD as a special project... read on....

LoC has an OPTION TO EXPLORE the CD's CONTENT THROUGH A 'GAME' that prints them certificates as they reach various milestones.

The Game: The Professor has left behind a Cluebook of 60 pieces of information about Jesus that the students can find in the program. As students fill up the Cluebook, the game rewards them with certificates. The game also rewards them with "combination codes" to unlock the "Mystery Chests" sitting in the Professor's office.

MORE CLUEBOOK GAME DETAILS ... After each lesson presentation is a quiz. If the student answers 5 or 6 of the quiz questions right, the game records the score in the "Professor's Scorebook." When they accumulate several completed quizzes/scores in a topic area, the Scorebook rewards them with an answer to a Clue question about Jesus to put in the Cluebook. As they fill up the 60 slots in the Cluebook, the game gives combination codes to unlock the mystery chests sitting on the Professor's Bookshelf.

The narrated lessons and multimedia content on the Professor's Bookshelf can be used in any order independent of the Scorebook and Cluebook game features. In fact, many Sunday Schools do not use the cluebook feature -until their kids clamor for time to complete it!

EXPLORE FOR CLUES IN THE 3-D CASTLE... If you're playing your way through LoC's content, not all the Cluebook clues are found as you finishing lessons and quizzes. Quite a few clues are only to be found only in a 3-D CASTLE which students can explore. You can see it out the window of  the Professor's office (seen in the office graphic at the top of this page). The Castle clues aren't that easy to find, they are hidden behind objects in various rooms of the castle you must explore. And as you try to enter rooms, you must answer MORE quiz questions about Jesus. O those sneaky software designers.

Life of Christ is a "smart" program. Can't find an answer to a Castle Quiz? Well, you''ll just have to go look it up on the Professor's Bookshelf.

MORE ABOUT THE PROFESSOR'S BOOKSHELF...

It's a treasure trove of interactive narrated maps, New Testament quizzes and NT book games. Content is organized by books. The books on the shelf include: Practice, Study, Bible Fact, Bible Timeline, and Bible Words (a dictionary of New Testament words). We include a complete outline of all Life of Christ's many content areas in our free Study Guide and Outline --exclusively from Sunday Software.

Sunday School teachers will often have their kids dive into the Professor's Bookshelf to answer a worksheet question after they've view a lesson and taken a quiz. I

Elsewhere in the office is the Professor's Multimedia Filing Cabinet, and a globe you can click on to access interactive maps of the New Testament. Life of Christ is packed with creatively presented Jesus content.

It can all be accessed at random, as you need, or as you direct them to (often with a worksheet). Or it can be used for self-study, or the Professor's Cluebook game. Our Teacher's Guide has many helps.

TEACHER'S GUIDE...

This is a big program that can be use in many different ways. That's why we have created a free OUTLINE and TEACHING TIPS. The LoC CD itself doesn't have this material. Our outline also gives you the ANSWERS to all the CLUES needed to solve the program's Cluebook. We also give you several UNDOCUMENTED TIPS about using the program, and program secrets. This information is not part of the CD. Visit www.sundaysoftware.com/xst.htm to print the free LoC Teaching Guide and Outline.

AGES 3rd GRADE -to- HIGH SCHOOL...

Each lesson is narrated, but you must be able to read in order to answer the quizzes and explore some of the 'other' content areas of the program. HOWEVER, many of us regularly use PARTS of this CD's great content with K's, 1st and 2nd graders. For example, we'll read the quizzes to our younger students, or help them with vocabulary/meaning..

Make sure you're getting the LATEST VERSION...

Sunday Software's stock of Life of Christ is the very latest version. It is possible that you may find the Life of Christ in a bookstore somewhere. However, it may not be XP/Vista/W7 compatible, or may not include many tweaks found in the very latest edition. Why mention this? Because our customer tell us they have been burned with older versions they've found elsewhere.

Teaching with Life of Christ
I've personally taught with Life of Christ CD in my lab every year for the past eight years. It's the kind of CD which makes sense to have on EACH COMPUTER in the lab because it will get plenty of use year after year. I often combine our kid's Life of Christ use with other "Jesus software." A Walk in the Footsteps of Jesus CD is an excellent companion, as is Walking in Their Sandals Bible Atlas --which has a surprising number of Jesus maps and content in it. Recently we switched between Life of Christ, Life and Ministry of Jesus CD and Footsteps to learn about "the man let down through the roof." Each of those CDs has something to contribute to that story.

I'll often create a worksheet that steers them through LoC and other Jesus software, with questions to answer that show me they've found and understood the content.

Over the years of using the presentations in this CD, I've often wished I had ANOTHER program I could use to follow up the material we had chosen that morning from Life of Christ.  I wanted a discussion enhancing program through which we could talk about Life of Christ's content and make a little of our own.  Let's Talk CD was the result. Let's Talk can do a lot of things, but the first reason I made it, was as a supplement to Life of Christ's presentations.

Life of Christ is one of the most popular CDs in our catalog for youth and confirmation classes. Some pastors have lended the CD to student to take home and told them "bring back the certificates" as they reach various levels in the program ...and then they discuss what they students have learned. Life of Christ is one of our most popular GIFT CDs. Though remember, it is serious content. Though creatively and engagingly presented, it is not a "browse and game" software program. It is for a young person who wants to learn more about Christ, and perhaps has a grandparent or parent ready to go through the CD with them.

Theologically speaking, Life of Christ is traditional and mainstream. In all the 40 lessons there are a few things I would say or express differently, and I'm sure that will be the case with any teacher. My free Outline and Teaching Tips reference some of these points and I offer many lesson suggestions.

In 2008 we released Jesus in Space CD to create a more kid-friendly and DEEPER approach to the stories of Jesus' Baptism, Last Supper, and Road to Emmaus stories. Check it out at www.sundaysoftware.com/jesus
